Guided Field Trips:

Join us for a 2-3 hour guided field trip activity at Humboldt Redwoods State Park! During your field trip, you will get to choose the areas of focus that will guide your experience. Students will get to learn about the park’s natural and cultural heritage, and its importance to the world, by exploring our redwood forest, its habitats, stories, and places. From the Eel River watershed to women’s redwood conservation herstory, old-growth redwood forests have something for everyone. Throughout the program students will expand their sense of place, participate in group learning activities and games, explore scientific concepts and techniques in the field. Our program aims to encourage students to make connections between historic redwood conservation actions and modern social justice movements. Field Trip activities will vary depending on the grade and teacher field trip objectives.

Teachers may choose 2 of the following topics:

  • Aquatic/Eel River Watershed Health: The South Fork of the Eel River flows through our park and provides students to get up close and personal with this watershed!

  • Women's Redwood Conservation Herstory: Women played a crucial role in the preservation of the coastal redwood forest. During this experience, students will explore this rich history!

  • Native Cultural History/Land Management: Humboldt Redwoods State Park is in many ways the land of many uses. During this experience, we'll gain a deeper understanding of the human connection to this place and its effect on the world around us.

  • Redwood Ecology, Adaptations, and Habitats: Redwood forests are teeming with unique and complex species adapted specifically to this environment! Come discover this unique ecosystem and the plants and animals that it supports.

This field trip will be hosted entirely outdoors, with some opportunities to sit under covered shelter if necessary. All attendees should be prepared for several short trail walks through the woods. Our interpreters are very flexible and happy to design an experience for you and your students based on your interest.

Field Trips are available throughout the school year. Guided field trips typically take 2-3 hours to complete, with a maximum group size of 50 students and a preferred adult to student ratio of 1:10.

Self-Guided Field Trips:

Self Guided Field Trips are facilitated independently by K-12 educators, chaperones, and youth program leaders without the support of California State Park Staff.
